Thinning of the central cornea means that it is not as strong as it should be. Pressure from within the eye causes it to bulge forward distorting the cornea.
To achieve clear vision, the eye needs a smooth regular surface. Keratoconus distorts vision a bit like the glass in a bathroom window.
How do keratoconus contact lenses help?
The contact lens rests on the white of the eye, the sclera, and clears the cornea. Tears fill up the gap between the cornea and the back surface of the lens.
This transfers the optical effect to the smooth front surface of the contact lens enabling clear vision.
