Our eyes are remarkable organs, capable of capturing the beauty of the world around us. However, for many, vision isn’t always crystal clear. Refractive errors, such as myopia, hypermetropia, and astigmatism, can affect the way we see and perceive the world. Myopia (Short-sight) 

Myopia, commonly known as shortsightedness, affects millions of people worldwide. It usually starts during childhood or adolescence and progresses over a period of time. It occurs because the eyeball grows slightly too long or the cornea grows too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. This may lead to more serious eye problems later in life. There is currently a great deal of research on how to stop, or at least minimise, development of myopia.

If you are shortsighted then distant objects appear blurry, while close-up objects remain relatively clear. Uncorrected, it can impact daily activities such as driving, reading signs, or recognising faces from a distance. Fortunately, various corrective measures, including glasses, contact lenses, orthokeratology and refractive surgeries, can restore your clear vision. 

 

Hypermetropia (Hyperopia or Long-sighted) 

Hypermetropia, or longsightedness, is another common condition which affects individuals of all ages. The opposite to myopia, hypermetropia occurs when the eyeball is shorter, or the cornea is less curved than it needs to be. This causes light to focus behind the retina instead of directly onto it.  

As a result, the lens within the eye has to change shape to focus the image onto the retina. The extra focussing effort is required both when looking at something far away or close to you. Whilst vision may be clear the excess effort to get things in to focus can cause headaches and eyestrain. If the hypermetropia is too great or in an older person, the internal lens can’t focus enough. Both far and nearby objects will appear blurred.  

Prescription glasses or contact lenses will do the extra focussing instead of the eye having to do it and so will relax the eye and relieve the symptoms. These eyes can also often be treated with laser refractive surgery.  

 

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is caused by a misshapen cornea, leading to distorted or blurred vision. Think of a rugby ball which is more steeply curved in one direction than the other. Individuals with astigmatism may experience difficulties in focusing, perceiving fine details, and experiencing visual clarity at any distance. This condition usually coexists with myopia or hypermetropia.  

It can also be caused by the crystalline lens inside the eye being tilted. 

Thankfully glasses or contact lenses incorporating a special component can compensate for the irregularities in the eye’s curvature. In some cases, refractive surgeries, such as LASIK, can also provide long-lasting correction.
