While they can identify vision changes and prescription needs, the investigation into eye health is limited to a basic level of equipment. An example of two technologies that have have revolutionised the way we assess your eyes are optical coherence tomography (OCT) and a topographer with electronic tear film surface quality (TFSQ) analysis. Using these tools, we can get a much deeper understanding of your eye health, which allows the detection of changes long before you experience symptoms.
OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)
This provides us with scans of the back of your eyes similar to an MRI. It takes incredibly detailed images of the layers beneath the surface of the retina. We can use this information to create images to detect early signs of conditions like diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration before they start to affect your vision. The precise measurements mean that we can see subtle changes over time giving us an early warning of the onset of glaucoma. The earlier we detect these conditions, the better our chances of managing them effectively and preserving your eyesight.
Topography and TFSQ (electronic tear film surface quality) analysis is another game-changer. It can be used to video your tears film giving valuable information on the causes of dry eyes and monitoring the success of treatment. The topographer measures the shape of the cornea in minute detail helping diagnosis of corneal conditions such as keratoconus and for fitting specialist contact lenses to treat it.
